We have had quite a few short breaks away in recent years and so we have honed our packing for these self-catering trips. Inevitably in trips past, there has been something we needed that we have forgotten or not even thought of. We now have a shared note in our iPhone Notes app which lists all these random items. When we went away in May for our anniversary, we broke an ornament in the lodge just as we were packing to leave which led to a frantic dash to the nearby petrol station for some superglue (it’s now on the list). Here is our list of extras – it doesn’t include all the things you would expect to take away like clothes and toiletries – but you might find this useful if you are taking a trip soon.
- Travel mugs
- Booze in cans (this is useful if you have a hot tub!)
- Spare swimsuit (see above)
- Storage boxes (we take the ones that unzip flat that go in our Ikea Kallax unit as these are so handy for shoes or hats/scarves etc. to help stay tidy while away)
- Draining mat – this was so useful! We found a lot of places have rubbish metal draining boards so this gem made the small bits of washing up we did so much easier
- Wash up, sponge, cloth and tea towels
- Nightlight
- Kitchen roll and foil
- Superglue
- Bin bags
- Candle lighter
- Smelly plug (in case the place has a funny whiff – particularly needed if it allows pets)
