An Artist’s Date and a Pivot

As I work through The Artist’s Way (the writing course book by Julia Cameron), one of the suggestions for creating a life as a writer is to take weekly Artist’s Dates. These are outings done alone to somewhere interesting, creative, or inspiring: a gallery, a museum, a garden, etc.

Tomorrow, I will be taking myself on an Artist’s Date to Packwood House, a nearby National Trust property. I have visited before many times but I have never been alone and I am not even sure if I have ever been in the house there. I will take my writing with me too so that I can get some words written in the cafe there if I am able.

I am excited to get out and do something to nurture my creativity as well as make use of our National Trust membership!

The pivot in the title refers to my change in direction for my novel which I have started for NaNoWriMo. I am already so enthused by the change of genre and I have found myself thinking so much more about my novel. I am actually excited to get time to write rather than having a sinking feeling about the task ahead. My word count starting from scratch but taking parts I had already written since 1st November is 14,801 so I am so far on track for the 50,000 word target for the month. My aim is to finish a book, not publish a book and this has released me from being so self-conscious and critical about my writing. It doesn’t have to be good; it just has to be finished!
