I feel like I have been in a reading slump all month and yet somehow, I have still managed to read six books last month, five of which were physical (either Kindle or paperback) and one was on audio. My favourites:
- Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney (Kindle) – the first book I have read by this thriller author, I generally really enjoyed this and found it quite gripping in parts. I read it quickly and liked that there was ambiguity and a twist that I hadn’t guessed.
- The Naturals by Jennifer Lynne Barnes (Kindle) – another new author to me, this first in a YA series was pacey, fun and exciting. It had a slight supernatural angle but mostly rooted in a realistic setting. The characters were appealing and the mystery was well handled.
- A Month in the Country by J. L. Carr (paperback) – a theme is appearing: this is another new-to-me author and I bought this book after watching the YouTube channel of Sherlock and Pages, an independent bookshop in Froome. This book appeared in the owner’s list of top books of 2024 and I really welcomed the shift in pace. This was a slower novel – and a short one – a gentle account of a WWI veteran’s summer where he works in a church uncovering an ancient mural.
- The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley – this debut novel is a sci-fi romp which I adored but now that I have finished, I want to read a physical copy as this was the audiobook I listened to in February. I will definitely be watching the upcoming TV adaptation.
