Since before Evelina was born, I have been collecting quotations or pieces of advice for her (and then Austin, when he was born) which I think are helpful, inspiring or encouraging. I used a Twitter account as it has been an easy way to store these over the years. When I read the Bloganuary prompt was to share a favourite quotation, I had a good idea which quotation would make the cut. Sure enough, when I checked my Twitter feed, it was the pinned tweet:
Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.
Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou has been an inspirational figure since I was a teenager – I read all her autobiographical series of books which started with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She is the embodiment of wisdom and although she is no longer with us, I write about her in the present tense because her wisdom lives on.
I particularly like this quote because it is both encouraging without being indulgent. It acknowledges that we are always learning. But it also rightly expects us to do something with what we learn.
Thank you for sharing!
