Word of the Year 2024

Last year, my word of the year was CONNECTION. This was by far the easiest word to keep in my mind throughout the year of any word I have ever chosen. Whenever I wanted to make a decision, feel happier, seek answers or find understanding, connection was always the answer.

This has made choosing my word for this year something of a challenge – it has big shoes to fill! I am also in such a place of uncertainty with my professional life that I genuinely have no idea what this year has in store for me. The following words all sprung to mind:

  • CHOICE
  • CHANGE
  • GROW
  • NEW
  • SEEK
  • CHALLENGE
  • BEGIN

The only problem is that every single one of these words gives me varying feelings of dread; I know in my gut they are not right.

I was reading the list Ali Edwards produces for her One Little Word workshop (which I have done in the past) and the words that gave me a tingle of recognition were less about my upcoming job hunt and more about what I want to invite into our lives for 2024. These were words like:

  • MAGIC
  • ADVENTURE
  • BELIEVE
  • SHINE
  • WONDER

Whilst I love these words, I am not sure they are what I need, though. They feel like words for future years. Right now, I am filled with uncertainty and doubt. I am relieved to be free but scared of what comes next. I think my word for 2024 needs to help me stay grounded and brave.

Therefore, my word for 2024 is STRONG. I have chosen the adjective rather than the abstract noun this time focusing on what I want to be rather than what I need to have.
