Hello 2024

The new year started slowly. I forced myself up despite my thumping head (75% horrid cold and 25% Prosecco) and my scratchy throat. I needed to check on the child(ren) and the dog. I needed a cup of tea. Austin managed an impressive post 8am wake-up and is sufficiently self-sufficient to wait for company which makes dual lie-ins a thing again after years of having to take it in turns.

As each member of the family slowly joined the day, I sat huddled up chain drinking tea; it’s the only thing that makes me feel better. The dreaded cold lurgy has finally got its grasping fingers around me. Despite this, I still feel quietly content. The night before had been filled with family games: Celebrity (although we played it with Disney characters and animals), Charades for Kids, a homemade ball toss game, apple bobbing, and Wii U Mario Party and Wii Sports. We all stayed up to watch the London fireworks – stunning as always – and then the kiddos collapsed into bed. We followed up not long after.

By about 11am, I had summoned enough energy to make brunch. We had waffles with bacon, eggs, fruit and maple syrup – a fine feast for the first day of the year. We walked the dog in the rain and she chased the ball enough that she was worn out. Then we headed over to my parents for a delicious buffet tea (frankly my favourite Christmas food!) and a lovely chat.

When we got home, the kiddos headed off to bed and then I played a bit of my new PS5 game, Stray (Rich bought it for me for Christmas) and now I am in bed, earlier than I have been to bed in weeks, hoping to get a better night’s sleep.

There are plans to be made. There are goals to be set. There are Words of the Year to be chosen. But for now, there is rest.
