Happy New Year

In the minutes and hours before the clock strikes twelve, the house is filled with friends reuniting. We had spent the day preparing: moving sofas, clearing rooms, cleaning, sprucing, filling the larder. When everyone arrives, the house is alive. Food is shared and drinks are poured. The children play hide and seek, despite the teenage years looming over them. Their laughter and shrieks punctuate the air while the adults share stories and news over the delicious aromatic fare.

After dinner, we move into the living room. The television is on and we are enjoying Sam Ryder’s party. His energy and talent are lifting the room and filling us with joy. As Big Ben signals the start of the new year, we toast, we kiss, we embrace, we laugh, we sing. We watch the fireworks in awe and we are happy. This is a happy New Year.
